New challenge for LiDAR: Benewake 512-line LiDAR empowers super perception

2022-07-01

(June 30, 2022, Beijing) Benewake was invited to attend the 2020 China Auto Supply Chain Conference, which is held annually and jointly guided by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the People's Government of Hubei Province, and the China Machinery Industry Federation. It is one of the most authoritative and influential industry events in the Chinese automotive industry, co-hosted by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the People's Government of Wuhan City, and the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Dr. Li Yuan, CEO of Benewake, gave a keynote speech entitled "LiDAR Beyond Human Perception Limits", sharing the essence and practical experience of Benewake's role in the entire automotive industry chain as a core sensor for intelligent connected vehicles.

512-line LiDAR ensures high resolution and ultra-long distance

"Currently, the global average traffic accident mortality rate is 0.018%, and the mortality rate for humans driving is about once every 200 million kilometers. When the speed exceeds 70 kilometers per hour, the mortality rate climbs to 98%. Can this accident rate be further reduced? This is the essence of our discussion on how to use sensors."

From the basic biological characteristics of the human eye, perception has limits. Humans have more than 500 neurons, which can refresh about 11 times per second, and the effective resolution is about 1 kilometer. However, for pure darkness, high intensity light, and other environments, the limitations are highlighted. LiDAR can compensate for the limitations of human vision, but objectively speaking, most LiDAR beams currently available only have dozens to a few hundred lines and cannot fully match the clarity of the human eye.

"Why do we need to make such a high-performance LiDAR with 512 lines? In addition to allowing car customers to enjoy marketing dividends, it is more considered from a practical perspective." Li Yuan further explained, "Resolution and distance are bundled together. At 100 meters and 200 meters, for a 128-line LiDAR, one can guess that it is a person and a car at 100 meters, but at 200 meters, the model of the car and the movements of the person cannot be distinguished. If it is a 512-line LiDAR, the appearance of a person and the type of car can be distinguished at a distance of 200 meters. This is also why we challenge the high difficulty index of 512-line LiDAR, which is closely related to engineers who are truly engaged in autonomous driving algorithms and domain control."

Overtaking in corners, Benewake's unmanned driving LiDAR has excellent performance

Regarding on-board LiDAR, Benewake has laid out three generations of products. The first generation was the auxiliary LiDAR, which only triggered the sensor; the second generation was the intelligent driving auxiliary LiDAR; and in the past few years, Benewake has focused on making the third generation of high-end unmanned driving main LiDAR.

The next generation of Benewake's layout of LiDAR is extremely outstanding in terms of performance, with a field of view angle of 120° × 25.6°, a range of 200M@10% reflectivity, a longitudinal resolution of 0.05°, equivalent to 512 lines, and adjustable horizontal resolution with a frame rate of 10 Hz. Currently designed for 7x24 hours, it adapts to various scenes without the need for a single scene purchase. For the next generation of products, the safety, reliability, and stability of the entire radar are the most important concerns for car manufacturers. Benewake fully considers functions such as dirty and obstructed detection, real-time closed-loop work, and especially the real-time fallback system. When the main system has a problem, our backup system can safely park the car.

The overall scan cycle of this LiDAR is 100ms, and Benewake has ingeniously increased the occupancy ratio of effective point clouds, reducing the time to generate one frame of point clouds to 80ms. As we all know, there is transmission delay during data transmission. Benewake uses this unique scanning method to save data generation time, so that the time for generating one frame of point clouds plus data transmission time is less than 100ms. In high-speed driving scenarios, this will be a huge gain, truly taking into account safety and efficiency.

Benewake has obtained a fixed point for vehicle business and initiated the deep cooperation mode

Yang Xudong, deputy director of the Electronic Information Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that under the development trend of "electrification, networking, and intelligence", cars, as a simple means of transportation, are transforming into mobile intelligent terminals, energy storage spaces, and digital spaces. This has made the connection between the automotive and electronic industries closer and communication more frequent.

Benewake has obtained a fixed point for vehicle business and previously participated in the customization of the group standard "LiDAR Detection Method for On-board Vehicles" by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and the China Society of Automotive Engineers. This year, it will also expand its production line and manufacturing base, and establish good cooperative relationships with more than ten well-known testing institutions to cover all vehicle regulations.

According to the organizer, 2022 is the year of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the critical year for implementing the "14th Five-Year Plan", and the turning point for the transformation and upgrading, green, and high-quality development of the automobile industry. The automobile industry is facing a new starting point, a new pattern, and new challenges. This will be a new starting point for the deep integration and innovation of the automobile industry supply chain, and a key year to create a new ecology of the Chinese automobile industry.

Fu Bingfeng, executive vice chairman and secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, said, "It is estimated that the production and sales of new energy vehicles in China will surpass 5 million units in 2022, and will enter the fast lane of development comprehensively. After the new energy vehicle industry successfully overtakes, intelligent connected vehicles have also successfully opened up a new track and entered the second half of the game with their heads held high."
