In 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Transport of China conducted vehicle-road collaboration testing and validation on Beijing-Shanghai highway. The "No. 1 highway" project covers over 400 facilities, 100+ vehicle-road collaborative application scenarios, and more than seven cloud platform terminals, creating a deep integration of "people, vehicles, roads, and the environment." As a partner, Benewake participated in the entire commercial implementation of this 1218-kilometer-long route, the world's first vehicle-road collaboration demonstration road connecting international cities. This smart project has now undergone extensive validation in the field of smart highway vehicle-road collaboration, operating for nearly 3 years. Benewake is the only high-performance LiDAR supplier for this section of the highway, playing an irreplaceable role in the crucial perception segment.
Benewake LiDAR possesses strong 3D perception capabilities and accurate spatial information location acquisition, compensating for the deficiencies of traditional sensing, millimeter-wave, and other perception technologies in terms of dimensions, density, coverage range, and distribution density. A single unit can cover bidirectional 8 lanes, providing all-weather, omni-directional, all-element high-reliability detection capabilities, and significantly reducing operation and maintenance costs.
Leveraging years of experience in transportation industry projects, Benewake LiDAR also features ease of integration. In terms of time synchronization, it supports various time synchronization methods such as gPTP, NTP, and PTP, achieving microsecond-level time synchronization. In spatial synchronization, 2 million points per second frequency facilitates algorithmic feature extraction, outputting three-dimensional coordinates, reflectivity, timestamps, and other information to facilitate the fusion of multiple integrations. These features of the system not only can provide rich environmental scenarios feedback, but also a scientific data foundation for logical business processes.
Benewake LiDAR's effective detection range exceeds 200 meters. With the compatiblity support of various sensors and related algorithms, Benewake LiDAR can provide rich real-time point-cloud data, effectively enhancing business scenario positioning perception capabilities and deepening informatization. In key areas of highways, such as toll booths, service areas, tunnel junctions, ramps and other scenarios, Benewake LiDAR can statistically analyze traffic flow in terms of vehicle types and speed, predict potential dangers, reduce accident rates, and improve vehicle traffic efficiency on highways, thereby achieving target structuring and digital base functions.
In the past, Beijing-Shanghai highway was defined by the media as a "difficult-to-drive" highway: it had many heavy trucks, with small vehicles weaving in and out, making it prone to traffic accidents. With the construction of "No. 1 highway" smart highway, not only has the traffic efficiency for passenger and freight vehicles on Beijing-Shanghai highway been improved, but the probability of direct accidents caused by trucks has also been reduced. In the future, the construction of smart highways will support features such as supporting trucks traveling in formation and free-flow tolling, significantly enhancing the efficiency of mainline logistics transportation.
Highways are the arteries of national economy, playing a pivotal role in promoting regional economic development, improving logistics efficiency, and increasing national competitiveness. In addition to deployment of Benewake LiDAR on No. 1 highway, it is also widely used in national trunk routes and regional ring roads, covering more than 13 provincial-level administrative regions, effectively enhancing the safety and convenience of highways, and providing a better experience for national travel.
